Fashion
designer Lilly Pulitzer, Iconic fashion designer died Sunday in Palm Beach,
Florida.
About her death
She
died at her home in Palm Beach, Florida at the age of 81. Her cause of death has not yet been
confirmed. The cremation Services in West Palm Beach says they did not know her
cause of death.
She
was surrounded by her Family.
Who is Lilly Pulitzer?
Lillian Pulitzer Rousseau better known as Lilly
Pulitzer, was an American socialite and fashion designer. She founded Lilly Pulitzer, Inc., which produces
clothing and other such wares featuring bright, colorful, floral prints. As the
brand is popular with high society, she was called the "Queen of
Prep".
How she started?
Pulitzer,
who married into the famous newspaper family, got her start in fashion by
spilling orange juice on her clothes. She designed a sleeveless shift dress
made of bright, colourful printed cotton that would camouflage fruit stains.
Lilly
found that customers loved her dresses so she produced more dresses in order to
sell at her fruit stand.
She
was selling more dresses than juice and she became more focused on designing
and selling and became known as her “Lillys”.
In
1959, she became president of her own company, Lilly Pulitzer, Inc. The
company's main factory was located in Miami, Florida and the fabrics were
produced by the Key West Hand Print Fabrics company in Key West.
From
the 1960s to the early 1980s, Pulitzer's bright, colorful clothes were very
popular, worn by elites such as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Caroline Kennedy,
and members of the Rockefeller, Vanderbilt and Whitney families.
Pulitzer
closed her original company in the mid-1980s after filing for Chapter 11
bankruptcy. The label was revived about a decade later after being acquired by
Pennsylvania-based Sugartown Worldwide Inc.; Pulitzer was only marginally
involved in the new business but continued reviewing new prints from Florida.
Lillly as a designer
She
designed collections around whatever struck her fancy like fruits, vegetables,
politics or peacocks. She entered in with no business sense. It was a total
change of life for her and made people happy.
The
line of dresses that bore her name was later expanded to swimsuits, country
club attire, children’s clothing, a home collection and a limited selection of
menswear.
“Style
isn’t just about what you wear, it’s about how you live,” Pulitzer said in
2004.
My Opinion
Fashion
industry mourns the death of popular Lilly Pulitzer. She is very old still her
Lilly dress remains a popular. You know, people come and go. We all live and we
all die.
Her
dress was very popular back then. Can you imagine she was starting selling
orange juice and because of fruit stains she became popular and produced floral
dresses.
I’ve
seen her dresses and yeah they are indeed beautiful, perfect for summer!! The
signature Lilly palette features tongue-in-cheek jungle and floral prints in
blues, pinks, light greens, yellow and orange - the colours of a Florida
vacation.
Lilly
has been a true inspiration to us. Lilly was a true original that has brought
together generations through her bright and happy mark on the world.
I
like what she said “We focus on the best, fun and happy things, and people want
that. Being happy never goes out of style,” that’s very true.
